When you think of Demi Lovato your mind probably goes straight to her often cheesy work on The Disney Channel (remember “Camp Rock”…and “Camp Rock 2”?). However, now headlining her own world tour, the former teen star has proved that she’s no longer just acting like a rock star on a TV movie, she actually is one in real life.
Lovato brought along opening acts MKTO (Malcolm Kelly and Tony Oller) and Christina Perri on this stop of the tour. The pop/rock line-up made for an electric night in the University of New Orleans Lakefront Arena.
The arena was filled with thousands of high-pitched screams as soon as the only boys on the tour hit the stage. The singing/rapping duo, MKTO, kept the audience hyped up as they bounced from one side of the stage to the next. After performing a few songs off of their album, they closed their set with their current single “Classic.”
Christina Perri performed next and sang a variety of songs from her discography as well as a Coldplay cover. Perri, known for emotional ballads like “Jar of Hearts” and ” A Thousand Years,” performed a surprising amount of upbeat songs as well like “Shot Me In The Heart.” Who knew Christina Perri actually has quite a number of sassy, up-tempo songs that don’t make you want to start crying into your pint of Ben & Jerry’s?
Following Perri, Demi Lovato took the stage, ready to put on a memorable show. The leather-clad songstress opened the set with her latest hit “Really Don’t Care” and moved from song to song with an effortless stage presence. Proving she’s just as much of a skilled performer as she is a singer, Lovato even took the time to show her talents on the piano, guitar, and even the drums.
Songs like “Heart Attack” and “Skyscraper” showed off the singer’s powerhouse vocals. Demi also performed a few throwback tracks from her debut album such as “Don’t Forget” and “Get Back.”
The most surprising part of the night had to be when Lovato twerked to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” something I never thought was possible:
Demi also took the time to interact with fans during the show by telling funny stories from her meet and greet and complimenting a few screaming little girls. She even took a few minutes of the show to speak to her fans as she introduced the song “Warrior,” briefly mentioning her troubled past and telling them what the song meant to her. As she played the song with tears running down her face, a video montage of her time spent with children in Kenya played on the jumbotron.
While displaying both her vulnerability and unapologetic attitude on stage, Lovato thanked her fans by saying: “You guys are some dedicated motherfuckers.” Yet another reminder that she is no longer the polished Disney star most of us grew up watching—and there’s nothing wrong with that.
