Four members of the LSU men’s tennis team competed in the pre-qualifying round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Championships Saturday.
Freshman Simon Freund was the only one to notch a win, defeating Weber State’s Todd Fought in two sets. The victory was the first of Freund’s young college career.
LSU coach Jeff Brown said it was great to see the freshman get a victory.
“It’s good that he was able to improve from his first outing,” Brown said. “It’ll be nice to see him build on that.”
Freund added a second win in a bonus match on Sunday.
Junior Boris Arias and sophomore John Michael Busch both dropped their matches in the first round of pre-qualifying. Junior Andrew Korinek advanced to the second round on a bye but ultimately fell in three sets to Ben Davis of Middle Tennessee State.
Arias won a bonus match Sunday as well. Arias was injured over the summer and Brown said he can see the junior getting back to his groove with each match.
Senior Chirs Simpson, junior Tam Trinh and sophomores Jordan Daigle, Eric Perez and Justin Butsch take the court in the singles qualifying round Monday, hoping to get the Tigers back on track in the tournament. The doubles teams of Simpson and Daigle and Arias and Butsch are also in the qualifying round.
Brown said he is excited to see the rest of his players get in on the action against the highest level of competition.
“Everyone [in the tournament] is ranked or has done well enough to be ranked at some level… but the guys have been playing at really high level,“ Brown said. “We need to show a high level of competitiveness that will translate to the rest of the season.”
