As classes begin, schedules start to form and free time becomes more and more a thing of the past. It may seem all too easy to trade the TV binge habits of summer for homework, studying and the occasional night out. After all, what student has the time to wander Netflix for hours when a midnight deadline looms? Have no fear, The Daily Reveille has your back. Ditch the browsing time and check out the best new shows of September and beyond.
“Houdini”: September 1, The History Channel
Synopsis: This is a two-night, four-hour special, starring a noticeably beefed-up Adrien Brody as Harry Houdini, one of the most fascinating figures of the early twentieth century.
Take: Anything starring an Academy Award winner (“The Pianist”, 2002) in his television debut is worth a go. Additionally, this writer can get behind anything that represents even a semblance of The History Channel’s return to actual history.
“Gotham”: September 22, FOX
Synopsis: Possibly the most highly anticipated new show of the fall, “Gotham” concentrates its efforts on the oft-mentioned but seldom-spotlighted dark ages, following the death of Thomas and Martha Wayne but before Gotham’s favorite son donned the cape.
Take: Subjectively, origin stories are the best part of any superhero narrative. Objectively, this show features a lot of them. Take it with a grain of salt, but “Gotham” could be the best comic book television since The CW’s “Smallville”.
“How to Get Away With Murder”: September 25, ABC
Synopsis: Sex, lies and murder. A familiar premise is infused with some fresh faces, specifically Viola Davis in her much anticipated return to the small screen.
Take: Shonda Rhimes continues her domination of the Thursday showscape, as her newest scandalous production follows both “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal”. Although it’s almost unprecedented for a creator to witness three of their inventions thriving simultaneously, Rhimes could be the woman to make it happen. Plus, Viola Davis. Case tentatively closed.
“Gracepoint”: October 2, FOX
Synopsis: Based on the UK’s immensely popular and critically acclaimed “Broadchurch”, FOX’s “Gracepoint” looks to be following the recent trend of long episodes and short seasons, specifically detective dramas and smash hits “True Detective” and “Fargo”.
Take: Featuring the most star-studded cast of the fall including David Tennant, Anna Gunn, Nick Nolte, Michael Peña and Jacki Weaver, “Gracepoint” looks to be an absolute can’t-miss.
“Mulaney”: October 5, FOX
Synopsis: The “Seinfeld” for millennials? A man can dream. It’s been tried before, but with hilarious, former “SNL” writer and standup comedian John Mulaney writing and starring, it’s definitely worth a shot.
Take: Despite the agonizing death of the multi-camera sitcom (a conversation for another time), here’s to hoping Mulaney, starring as a fictionalized version of himself, can be the man to return television to the glory days. Chalk it up as the best new comedy of the year.
