Grade: B
With some tracks borrowed from previously released records, The Gaslight Anthem’s “The B-Sides” offers a rehashing of old favorites, but with more versatility. Crooning through an acoustic version of “The ’59 Sound” that beckons back to “Sink or Swim” era Gaslight, vocalist Brian Fallon reminds listeners that the New Jersey band of old isn’t dead despite the new, more melodic direction heard on 2012’s “Handwritten.” Covers, such as The Rolling Stones’“Tumbling Dice,” display an alt/country-sounding quality, showing that the band will likely cover new ground on its upcoming release. The compilation lacks well-deserved new content, making it a less exciting release than if the band released new material. However, the music itself is good, making it a worthwhile release leading up to the band’s currently untitled album due out later this year.
