As winter lingers, the LSU track and field team will compete indoors again this weekend. Both the men’s and women’s teams will participate in the Texas A&M Triangular on Friday and Saturday.
The indoor season’s second meet comes after an impressive season opener, in which the Tigers and Lady Tigers won a combined five events and posted 11 indoor personal bests. For team members like junior sprinter Quincy Downing, the meet offered s chance to stretch their legs against other teams and gauge their preparation for this upcoming season.
“It felt great,” Downing said. “We’ve all been training very hard, so to get back to competition life was a great feeling.”
Although the men and women tasted success for the first time this season, these two squads are far from satisfied. Downing said runners are looking to finish in the top 10 in their individual races, so they can assemble an impressive body of work and claim a spot in the NCAA championship races.
While some team members stride to improve times, this weekend’s meet offers sprinters like junior Aaron Ernest their first opportunity to race this winter.
“I didn’t get a chance to compete last weekend, but it was a good feeling to see the guys out there,” Ernest said. “It feels like years since I’ve been out there.”
At the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium, LSU has experienced success in the past. The Lady Tigers return as champions from last year’s meet, while the men’s team hopes for progress after a third place finish.
Although the indoor season began only last weekend, just 34 days remain until the SEC Championship begins Thursday, Feb. 27. The Tigers will be moving quickly as they aim to stay ahead of the curve.
