Final: LSU 21 Iowa 14
After a dominant first half in which LSU gained more than twice Iowa’s total offensive yards, the Tigers took the full four quarters to put the Hawkeyes away with a 21-14 victory.
Iowa got back into the game in the second half with an interception by defensive back John Lowdermilk that was returned to the half yard line. LSU didn’t score again until 2:02 remaining in the fourth quarter, when junior runningback Jeremy Hill led a six-play, 92-yard drive down the field and capped it off with a 37-yard touchdown run.
Hill finished the game with 216 yards on 28 attempts and two touchdowns. Hill became the first LSU runningback to rush for more than 200 yards since Alley Broussard rushed for an LSU-record 250 yards against Ole Miss on Sept. 20, 2004.
LSU freshman quarterback Anthony Jennings finished the game 7-19 passing with the interception to Lowdermilk. Jennings did add the Tigers’ first touchdown of the game on a 3-yard run in the first quarter.
LSU totalled 302 total offensive yards to Iowa’s 233, and the Tigers dominated time of possession, holding the ball for more than nine minutes longer than the Hawkeyes.
The victory is LSU’s first postseason win since the 2011 Cotton Bowl when it defeated Texas A&M 41-24.
