The tradition of burning bonfires on the levee during Christmas time dates back to the 1800s, but this year the tradition is getting a taste of current events.
Organizers of the bonfire in St. James and St. John Parishes have built a 17-foot-tall wooden structure that symbolizes the “hands up, don’t shoot” movement that was sparked by the killing of 18-year-old Michael Brown by a police officer. Brown’s killing and the fact that the police officer was not indicted for the act has led to protests across the nation.
According to a story by The Advocate, organizers hope to use the bonfire to spread awareness about the issue.
The bonfire will take place Wednesday night, on Christmas Eve.
