The LSU women’s tennis team is still searching for their first SEC victory of the season after dropping a pair of matches against Florida and South Carolina during their conference opening weekend.
This made the team’s record 1-6 with the only win coming from a 4-2 victory against Southern University on Feb. 28.
Florida
LSU opened up conference play against the No. 13 Florida Gators Friday, March 4. Despite their best efforts, the Tigers were defeated by a score of 6-1.
LSU seems to still be struggling with giving up points via walkovers. Problems with COVID-19 have kept the Tigers off balance all season, and they have had to give up courts to almost every opponent before they even played.
The Tigers only played with two teams in doubles, giving Florida an automatic victory on the No. 3 court.
They also played with only four players in singles, which meant Florida had a lead of 3-0 going into singles play. Florida was dominant throughout singles play, and the Tigers’ only point came from Nina Geissler, a junior from Rorschach, Switzerland.
South Carolina
LSU hosted South Carolina on Sunday, March 6 and were once again defeated 6-1.
Once again, the Tigers lost court No.3 via walkover, which gave South Carolina the advantage going into doubles. This time, LSU was able to play five players in singles, which meant the Gamecocks went in with a 2-0 lead.
Rania Azziz, a freshman, secured the only point of the day for the Tigers and got her first SEC singles win of her young career.
Ena Babic gets recognized by CCACSA
The Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes announced the student athletes of the month on Wednesday, March 8, and one of the students recognized was Ena Babic of the women’s tennis team.
Babic, a graduate student, joins the list of students recognized for their dedication to the community and academic success.
Looking Forward
Coming off these two tough losses at home, the Tigers will face their first two away matches against SEC opponents this weekend.
First, the Tigers will face Ole Miss in Oxford at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center for their first SEC road test on Friday, March 11. The match will begin at 3 p.m. CT. The Tigers will then head to Starkville, Mississippi, to take on Mississippi State at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Center on Sunday, March 13 at 12 p.m. CT.
The team will battle to bring home their first victory against an SEC opponent this season and their first win away from Baton Rouge.
