LSU defensive tackle, Mekhi Wingo, was selected by the Detroit Lions in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
Wingo was selected with the No. 189 overall pick in the draft. He marks the sixth LSU player to be selected in the 2024 draft.
In his two seasons at LSU, Wingo totaled 68 tackles, 35 being solo tackles, four pass deflections, seven-and-a-half sacks, and a forced fumble.
The transfer from Missouri allowed himself to stick out with his work ethic. For the 2023 season, Wingo was given SEC Community Service Team honors, AFCA Good Works Team honors, LSU Permanent Team Captain honors, and was awarded the Iron Tiger Award in 2022.
Wingo was also given the prestigious No. 18, which is given to the player who best displays LSU’s spirit.
The 6-foot, 284-pound defensive tackle competed at the 2024 NFL Combine, where he recorded a 4.85-second 40-yard dash, which was the second fastest time among defensive tackles. He also recorded a 1.64-second 10-yard split, a 9-foot-1 broad jump, a 31.5-inch vertical jump, and 25 reps on the bench press.
While his speed and versatility, as he’s able to come off the edge, were attractions to NFL scouts, his size was a main concern during the draft preparation period.
But between his work ethic and overall skill set, the Lions felt he could be a valuable piece to their roster.
