EPISODE 12: Comets & Asteroids: Collision Course
Original Air Date: 12-21-1982
Rebroadcast Date: 6-27-2024
Comets are defined as icy bodies of frozen gasses, rocks and dust left over from the formation of the solar system about 4.6 billion years ago. Due to their decreased mass, they tend to orbit between gravitational fields, similar to an ice skater performing figure 8s. Unlike their Counterparts, asteroids are usually denser with a stronger core comprised of solid rock. Their orbits are steady and uniform like a planet orbiting a star. What happens when one of the masses deviates and begins hurtling at a planet at high velocities? Join us tonight to explore the thrilling impacts of when an asteroid makes contact.
