Week 3 of college gymnastics saw conference play begin for the Southeastern Conference, and we’ve already witnessed three perfect 10s, two of which came from the LSU squad.

Here’s who’s stock is rising and falling after the first week of SEC play:
Rising
LSU’s new superstar duo
The No. 8 ranked Tigers dominated the No. 6 ranked Kentucky Wildcats in their SEC opener, 198.125-197.600, notching the second-highest score fans have seen from a team so far this season. Two perfect 10s, one from Haleigh Bryant and the other from Kiya Johnson, were large contributors to this score.
Bryant notched her perfect 10 off a flawless performance on the uneven bars, where she’s been noted as LSU’s anchor.
The Tigers had already secured the victory when the time for Johnson to perform her floor routine had arrived. But, LSU head coach Jay Clark knew what the routine meant to his athlete. He decided to keep her out there.
In the Tigers’ meet against Kentucky last season in the PMAC, Johnson tore her Achilles in the middle of her floor routine. That was last routine of her 2023 season. On Friday, her choreography was an exclamation point at the end of a huge win as LSU became the third squad to cross the 198-point benchmark in 2024.
“I’ve been looking forward to doing a floor routine in the PMAC for a long time now,” Johnson said following LSU’s win.
Bryant and Johnson have continued to step up for the Tigers this season and have established themselves as superstars early in the 2024 season.
“They’re hammers,” Clark said when asked about the pair. “They’re awesome.”
The Sooners’ new high scores
For the second week in a row, he Oklahoma Sooners competed in a quad meet, and came out on top with the same result: first place. But, first place in their second quad meet wasn’t the headline, as the Sooners racked up the newest high score of the young 2024 season, 198.325.
Jordan Bowers led Oklahoma once again with a career-high 39.775 all-around high score.
The Sooners’ dominance on the balance beam continued, notching their highest total of the season, 49.725.
No. 10 Denver, No. 11 UCLA, and unranked Stanford all finished at least 1.00 lower than the No. 1 ranked Oklahoma squad. So far, the Sooners look like the heavy favorite in the 2024 National Championship chase.
Leanne Wong and the Florida Gators
Gator All-American Leanne Wong’s name was noted just about everywhere in No. 7 Florida’s 197.325-197.025 road victory against No. 12 Auburn on Friday.
Wong finished first in her all-around debut scored a season-high on uneven bars and even won her first exercise on the floor in 2024. She scored 39.625, 9.95 and 9.95, respectively.
With Wong and the Gators surging, it’s just the right time for them to be hosting the No. 6 Alabama Crimson Tide in what will surely be one of the many matchups to watch in Week 4.

Falling
Georgia
Freshman Lily Smith has been incredible to watch for the Bulldogs this season. Smith stunned the crowd in her Week 1 debut against North Carolina State with a 9.975 on the uneven bars. Her performance led Georgia to a dominant 196.200-194.225 thrashing over the Wolfpack.
On Saturday, Smith’s performance on bars was flawless, landing her a perfect 10. She became the first Georgia freshman to record a perfect 10 since 2001 and the first on bars since 1993.
But unfortunately for the Bulldogs, Smith’s historic performance fell by the wayside as the rest of her squad couldn’t hold up their end of the bargain. The No. 20 Georgia squad fell to No. 12 Missouri 197.400-197.050 at home.
A loss after Smith’s historic effort is a bit disheartening for the Bulldogs, to say the least, as this loss drops Georgia out of the Top 25.
No. 3 Alabama and No. 4 Arkansas’s lackluster conclusion
In a sport where every decimal point is counted, Alabama and Arkansas still somehow found a way to tie the meet at 197.525 on Friday. It’s a bit of an unsatisfying conclusion to one of, if not the most, anticipated matchup of Week 3, not only in the SEC but in college gymnastics as a whole.
While the tie doesn’t help either side, it hurt the Crimson Tide much more than the Razorbacks, who fell to No. 6 in the Top 25 after being passed up by No. 3 LSU, No. 4 Arkansas and No. 5 Utah in average score.
