Pop Punk started in the late 70s/ early 80s (Ramones, Buzzcocks, The Decedents). However, pop punk as we know it today started in the 90s and evolved well into the 2000s. Pop punk is all about relatable and introspective lyrics, typically about heartache, teenage angst and suburbia. The lyrics also sometimes have a humorous tone to them, too.
In the 90s, bands like Green Day and blink-182 pushed the genre into the mainstream. In the 2000s, bands like All Time Low, Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco and Paramore blurred the lines between pop punk and emo pop. Fall Out Boy’s Take This to Your Grave is their first album and the cover is considered the pop punk Abbey Road. 
Warped Tour and MySpace were very important to the pop punk subculture. 
The 2010s saw an underground revival with bands like Knuckle Puck, The Wonder Years and Neck Deep. This era of pop punk is considered to be “darker and more mature.” Also, during this time 5 Seconds of Summer broke out into the pop punk scene. While they aren’t considered pop punk (it was more of a marketing ploy), they did bring a new generation into the scene. 
Blink-182 also broke up once again in 2014 due to Tom Delonge leaving to start a company that researched the existence of aliens.
