Brian Kelly announced in a statement Wednesday that four defensive coaches, including defensive coordinator Matt House, won’t return to the coaching staff in 2024.
“This morning, I met with Matt House, Kerry Cooks, Robert Steeples, and Jimmy Lindsey to inform them that they would not return to our coaching staff in 2024. I want to thank each of these coaches for their work on behalf of our football program and our institution during their time here,” Kelly said in the statement.
House came to LSU with Kelly prior to the 2022 season and was part of one of the program’s worst ever defensive seasons in 2023. LSU gave up 28 points per game and 416.6 yards per game, both ranking second to last in the SEC.
Cooks and Steeples joined the staff with Kelly in 2022 and coached the 114th ranked pass defense (out of 130) in the country in 2023.
Lindsey joined the LSU staff prior to the 2023 season and spent much of the season away from the team after suffering an undisclosed medical emergency shortly before fall camp.
The changes come later than what’s typical in college football, but Kelly remained adamant during December that he wanted to keep the staff together through Early Signing Day and the bowl game.
