Gov.-elect Jeff Landry said Wednesday he would host his transition team at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, not LSU, as years of past incomers have done.
“We are going to be doing things different,” he told reporters at his first press conference since winning the primary election outright earlier this month.
The location of the transition team is an early example of how Landry is shaking things up. A long string of governors have held their transitions at LSU, including his predecessor and current Gov. John Bel Edwards.
The space typically used for the headquarters — the 12th floor of Kirby Smith Hall — no longer exists because the building was demolished in 2022.
Explaining his decision, Landry said he wanted to show that all the state’s universities are important — and cited the fact that ULL is his alma mater.
He felt the choice would make “it easier for everyone around the state to reach us.”
“I’ve said from day one that this administration would ensure that every part of the state has a voice, not just those who occupy the Capitol,” Landry said. “This administration is going to represent the people of Louisiana, not just the political class.”
