Psychedelic rackkkkk! A genre inspired by hallucinogens such as LSD, which is clearly heard through its use of feedback, electronics, long instrumentals, drug-related lyrics, heavy/distorted guitars, and sound effects. It had two main variants– the whimsy British psychedelic and the harder American psychedelic (also known as Acid Rock).
This genre is often associated with the hippie movement. In 1969, many psychedelic bands like Jefferson Airplane and Jimi Hendrix played at Woodstock. Woodstock and Summer of Love both happened at the peak of psychedelia.
This same year came the downfall of the genre as many artists passed away from drug use, bands broke up or transitioned into progressive rock. Also, the Manson murders gave the hippie movement a bad name after they claimed that the Beatles song “Helter Skelter” inspired their actions.
