Kim Mulkey and her Tigers took care of business on Sunday afternoon with a 81-36 win over Northwestern State.
Sunday’s victory gives the Tigers win No. 11 of the season, improving their record to 11-1. The win also marks the team’s 11th win in a row.
There were many mismatches on the floor, but Aneesah Morrow and Angel Reese made their advantages most clear.
Both Reese and Morrow finished the game with double-double performances; Reese led the team with 25 points along with 14 rebounds, and Morrow finished with 16 points and 14 rebounds.
Morrow’s double-double performance marks her seventh this season, and her sixth double-double in a row. Reese now has five double-doubles on the season, and her performance against Northwestern State marks her second in a row.
Mikaylah Williams scored 14 points, which all came in the second half, including two made three-pointers. Flau’jae Johnson also scored in double figures, as she added 13 points for the Tigers.
Aalyah Del Rosario came off the bench and used her height to her advantage, scoring eight points along with nine rebounds
Just as LSU was controlling the glass and grabbing rebounds, their all-around defense was executing. The Tigers forced 31 turnovers from Northwestern State, including six steals from Last-Tear Poa and five from Johnson.
With just under five minutes left to play, Kim Mulkey was hit with a double-technical foul and was ejected. Morrow was called for a charge, and Mulkey didn’t like the call. Luckily for the Tigers, it didn’t come in a situation that could have costed them the game.
Sharna Ayres, who played at LSU for the 2020-21 season, led Northwestern State with 10 points along with five rebounds.
As Southeastern Conference-play gets closer and closer, the Tigers seem to be finding their identity more and more. Led by Morrow, Reese and Williams, the team is learning how to play with each other more after each game.
But over the past three games, Reese, Morrow and company have been figuring things out without Hailey Van Lith, who’s been out with a plantar fasciitis.
The good news for LSU is that it only plays two games for the next two weeks, so the Louisville transfer could have enough time to rehabilitate her injury before the start of conference play.
However, the team’s road matchup to Baltimore, Angel Reese’s hometown, to take on Coppin State may be a quick turnaround for Van Lith.
The Tigers will hope to improve even more in time for SEC-play on Wednesday at Coppin State. That game will tip-off at 5 p.m. C.T. from the Physical Education Complex at Coppin State, and will be televised on ESPN-plus.
