The No. 1 LSU softball team defeated No. 6 Oklahoma, 10-2, in a home run filled contest to sweep the weekend’s two game series.
The Tigers (30-1, 5-1 SEC) relied on four home runs to down the Sooners (24-5), moving their record at Tiger Park to 23-0 this spring. LSU coach Beth Torina said the lineup adjusted well at the plate today after recording just two hits Friday against Oklahoma’s freshman Paige Parker.
“The great thing about today is we were able to make so many good adjustments throughout their entire pitching staff, which I really like to see,” Torina said.
In the bottom of the first inning, LSU seized control of the game immediately. Senior center fielder A.J. Andrews and sophomore right fielder Bailey Landry each drew a walk to give Bianka Bell a chance to knock in runs early in the contest.
Bell drove a 1-1 pitch well over the the left center field wall to give LSU a 3-0 lead.
Torina said it was nice to grab the early lead.
“There’s no question it’s easier to play with a lead,” Torina said. “It’s easier on our pitching staff, it’s easier on our defense. You get to play with a completely different mindset, so scoring first is one of the things we try and live by and it was great to get a three-run lead early in this game.”
The home run was the end of junior pitcher Kelsey Stevens’ outing. She didn’t record an out, allowing two walks and Bell’s home run.
Oklahoma turned to Parker again in the circle to try and keep the Sooners in the game. She prevented any further damage by retiring the first three batters she faced.
Oklahoma refused to go away, responding at its first opportunity in the top of the second. Junior right fielder Tori Nirschl hit a solo shot to left field to cut LSU’s lead to 3-1.
However, LSU reestablished its three-run lead through a home run off the bat of junior catcher Kellsi Kloss in the bottom of the third, stretching the lead to 4-1.
Oklahoma answered immediately again, this time with junior left fielder Kady Self hitting a solo home run to left center to put Oklahoma within two runs in the top of the fourth.
That was the end of the scoring for the Sooners, but the Tigers were far from done at the plate.
LSU scored two runs in the fifth and four in the sixth to stop the game early.
In the fifth, Bell and sophomore catcher Sahvanna Jaquish hit back-to-back home runs for the first time this season to make LSU’s lead 6-2. Jaquish said she knew the ball was gone when it left her bat.
In the bottom of the sixth, sophomore second baseman Constance Quinn walked and freshman left fielder Emily Griggs singled. Andrews followed with a double to right center to drive in a run and extend the lead to 7-2. Landry’s ground out in the next at-bat made the score, 8-2.
RBI singles from Jaquish and junior first baseman Sandra Simmons capped the scoring at 10-2 and ended the game courtesy of the mercy rule.
After winning the series, LSU hosts South Alabama at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
