Remember when family sitcoms ruled the world?
Maybe I was just an avid Nick at Nite viewer, but I certainly remember getting all settled on the couch to watch families of all kinds bringing light-hearted storylines to my living room.
One of those shows was “Full House.”
The character from the sitcom that I related to the most was eldest sister, D.J. Tanner played by Candace Cameron Bure.
From the show’s premiere in 1987 to the show’s finale in 1995, we saw D.J. go from tween to teen to adult. She dealt with bullies, boys and her dad’s nagging, all of which we could completely relate to and ask ourselves, “What would D.J. do”?
While Tanner emotionally developed, so did her wardrobe. The show started in the ’80s so many of her outfits were full of ’80s trends, but as the show progressed into the ’90s, her style toned down a bit to match the change in eras.
A very ‘80s outfit she wore was an all-black ensemble consisting of joggers and a blazer with huge shoulder pads.
Joggers have made a comeback recently so finding yourself a pair in black, denim or a sweat pant material is incredibly easy. However, ditch Tanner’s outfit pairings and instead pair them with a t-shirt or tank top.
As for the blazer, this is another item you can steal from this outfit to pair with a nice skirt, dress or tailored pants. Just make sure yours doesn’t have shoulder pads.
As Tanner headed into the ‘90s, her outfits included less embellishments.
One would be high-waisted jeans with a sweater. This outfit is great, except for the outdated look of the high-waisted jeans. Instead of finding a pair of “mom jeans” look for jeans that have a high waist, but also include a tailored, skinny leg and fit close to the hips. This way you don’t have to worry about them fitting strange and making you look larger than you are.
Tanner also enjoyed high-waisted shorts.
These are currently trending and while recently they have been made to fit tighter on the body, finding a pair like Tanner’s is coming back into style. Just make sure if you choose this style, the shorts fit your waist well so they aren’t baggy and are paired with a tailored top, like Tanner’s floral shirt.
