LSU junior infielder Bianka Bell and freshman pitcher Allie Walljasper were honored as the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Player and Pitcher of the Month for February, the LSWA announced Monday.
The awards mark the first given to Bell and Walljasper by the LSWA.
In February, Bell hit .477 and tallied a team-leading 31 hits, including 14 extra-base hits, during the Tigers’ best start in program history (21-0). Bell opened the season with a 11-game hitting streak that tied her career record and was the third longest in season history. She hit seven home runs and 29 RBIs.
Walljasper started her LSU career with 7-0 record in February, including six complete games and three shutouts. She led the Tigers in ERA (0.51) and innings pitched (44.1) while finishing second on the team with 43 strikeouts. Walljasper has surrendered only one extra-base hit this season while tallying at least five strikeouts in five of her eight total appearances.
