As snow flurries came and went Friday night in Lexington, Kentucky, the No. 1 LSU softball team fell to No. 16 Kentucky, 3-1, in Game 1 of the Tigers’ second away Southeastern Conference series.
The Tigers (31-2, 5-2 SEC) never got into an offensive rhythm against the Wildcats’ (22-8, 2-5 SEC) ace junior Kelsey Nunley (10-4).
While LSU’s offense struggled against Nunley, the Wildcats’ lineup picked its spots against freshman pitcher Allie Walljasper (9-1) and handed her the first loss of her collegiate career.
In the bottom of the third, junior catcher Griffin Joiner got the Wildcats on the board with a RBI single through the left side. Sophomore right fielder Breanne Ray extended Kentucky’s lead to 2-0 with a sacrifice fly to left field.
After Joiner added another run with a solo homer in the fifth, junior designated player Kellsi Kloss cut the Wildcats’ lead to only two with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
LSU’s rally fell short in the seventh when the Tigers were retired in order.
The Tigers will face Kentucky in Game 2 at 11 a.m. Saturday in Lexington, Kentucky.
