The No. 2 LSU baseball team extended its win streak to nine games as it took care of Grambling State, 7-1, at Alex Box Stadium on Wednesday
afternoon.
LSU (12-1) was helped by its steady pitching performances to keep five Grambling (2-9) baserunners stranded and allow LSU to control much of
the contest.
LSU freshman pitcher Doug Norman’s midweek skirmishes fizzled against Grambling as he went four innings and allowed five hits against 17 batters. Norman gets his first win of his career because LSU coach Paul Mainieri’s announcement before the game stating the team would use at least three pitchers, making Norman eligible.
Norman allowed only one run, his lowest mark this season.
“I thought he did all right,” Mainieri said. “He gave up some hits, but I thought the fourth inning was his best inning. I thought he did okay — handled himself all right. Overall, I thought he performed all right.”
The LSU bullpen was flawless from there, muzzling the Grambling offense for no hits while combining for seven strikeouts. Grambling saw only one baserunner the remainder of the game coming via sophomore Collin Strall’s hit batter.
“Our bullpen is going to tell the tale of our season,” Mainieri said. “So far, I like what I’m seeing. Guys are starting to settle in to some roles and doing a
really nice job, and I think everybody we brought into the game I thought pitched fantastic. All of the guys did a really nice job out of the bullpen.”
After giving up a leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt to begin the game, Norman laid a pitch in the zone for Grambling shortstop Larry Barraza, who roped it into center field to plate a run and gain an early 1-0 advantage.
LSU waited only an inning before taking its first lead of the game. Senior catcher Kade Scivicque sparked the rally as he knocked a double to right center to score a run and tie the game. Scivicque would tally a run in the inning as well, scoring on sophomore left fielder Jake Fraley’s double to right field by three batters later to give LSU a 2-1 lead.
Scivicque has been a steady hand for LSU at the plate so far this season. The 5-foot-11, 223-pound catcher leads all starters in batting average (.423), slugging percentage (.846), on base percentage (.469) and leads the team in home runs with three coming into Wednesday’s game.
The Maurepas, Louisiana, native also helped spark the squad’s current winning streak after a loss to Nicholls State on Feb. 18.
“I’m just trying to see a good pitch to hit and hit it hard through the infield,”
Scivicque said. “I’m just trying to be patient and look for a pitch I can drive and try to put a good swing on it.”
Scivicque would finish 2-for-3 on the day with an RBI and a run scored.
LSU doubled its lead in the bottom of the sixth on three hits, led by senior in-fielder Conner Hale. Hale put a triple to the center field wall to score junior shortstop Alex Bregman then crossed the plate for a run of his own on a fielder’s choice one batter later. Hale has hit safely in all thirteen games this season and finished Wednesday 1-for-4 with an RBI.
LSU tallied two more in the bottom of seventh and one more in the eighth to cap a controlling victory before the team heads for Houston, Texas for the Houston College Classic.
“We’ve gotten off to a good start,” Bregman said. “I think we’re meshing as a team really well. A lot of the younger guys are stepping up and getting
the job done.”
