Flags over state government buildings are being flown at half-staff today in remembrance of the Marines and soldiers who lost their lives in Tuesday’s Black Hawk helicopter crash. Governor Bobby Jindal issued the executive order stating, “This terrible tragedy took some of America’s greatest heroes from us far too soon.”
Tuesday, four Louisiana Guardsmen with the 1-224th Air Assault Helicopter Battalion based in Hammond, and seven North Carolina-based Marines crashed off the Florida panhandle into the Santa Rosa Sound.They were participating in a training exercise when, officials say, the UH-60 Black Hawk went down in heavy fog.
The weather has hampered recovery efforts but as of Friday morning, nine of the eleven bodies were recovered.
