After No. 1 Florida handed the No.3 LSU softball team its first loss of the season Friday night, the Tigers returned the favor Saturday afternoon with a 14-10 victory in Game 2 of the weekend series, breaking the Gators’ 34-game winning streak dating back to last season.
LSU (26-1) wasted no time getting on the board with nine runs on seven hits in the top of the first inning. But the Gators (28-1) chipped away at LSU’s lead by tallying three runs in the first, two runs in the fourth and one run in the fifth. The Tigers’ headed into the sixth inning leading Florida, 10-6.
After hitting a 3-run homer in the first inning and a solo shot to center in the fifth, Florida junior catcher/infielder Taylore Fuller came to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs. On the third pitch of the at-bat, Fuller tied the game, 10-10, with a grand slam to left field.
Although Florida senior pitcher Lauren Haeger (12-0) held LSU to only one run through four innings pitched, the Gators turned to freshman Aleshia Ocasio (9-1) in the top of the seventh.
After junior shortstop Bianka Bell singled to left field to load the bases and sophomore catcher/infielder Sahvanna Jaquish struck out, junior catcher Kellsi Kloss came to the plate with two outs in the top seventh and a chance to break the game open.
Kloss smashed a grand slam over the left field wall, putting the Tigers ahead of the Gators, 14-10.
Freshman pitcher Carley Hoover (7-1) held the lead by striking out the leadoff batter and closing out the frame with two ground outs despite allowing a double.
The rubber match between the two teams begins at 11:00 a.m. Sunday
