LSU students gathered in the quad to peacefully protest in response to the riots in Baltimore and the death of Freddie Gray.
“How are we going to remain docile and submissive and have any change?” LSU student and protest organizer Blair Imani Brown said.
Students gathered “Black Lives Matter” posters after Gray’s death in Baltimore on April 19.
According to USA Today, Gray was arrested on April 12 and suffered a life-threatening spinal cord injury while in police custody. Police stopped Gray after he fled “unprovoked upon noticing police presence,” according to a police report.
Students were uncertain about the protest.
“There’s a lot of mixed reactions,” LSU student Colby Laverne said. “A lot of people didn’t take it seriously, and there are some people that look frightened by it.”
