David Kurpius, Associate Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management at the University has been named the dean of the Missouri School of Journalism, the school announced late Wednesday.
An 18-year veteran of the University, Kurpius arrived in 1997 as an assistant professor of journalism at the Manship School of Mass Communication. He became a tenured professor in 2003 and in May of that year, became the interim director of Student Media, a position he held until 2005.
In 2005, Kurpius was named the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Admissions at the Manship School, where he served for five years before taking his current title in 2010.
In an email to the faculty of the Manship School of Mass Communication, dean Jerry Ceppos credited Kurpius’ service and said much of what the school has become is due to his dilligence.
“Missouri is fortunate to hire a dean with Dave’s rare combination of professional broadcast experience, academic credentials, leadership skills and, most unusual, in-the-trenches experience in growing enrollment,” Ceppos wrote.
In the email, Ceppos said Kurpius asked him to make the following statement:
“The Manship School [is] a special place where innovation and excellence thrive. It played a significant role in shaping my career and my future. I will miss my colleagues and friends and will be forever grateful for the opportunities and personal development that the Manship School provided.”
Kurpius will begin his tenure in Columbia on July 1.
