Despite notching its second Southeastern Conference series sweep of the season against Ole Miss last weekend, the No. 1 LSU softball team fell to Mississippi State, 9-4, Wednesday night in its worst loss of 2015 and its first midweek loss.
The Bulldogs’ (30-10, 8-3 SEC) lineup found success against LSU’s (36-4, 9-3 SEC) pitching staff, scoring nine runs and earning 11 hits against three Tiger hurlers.
LSU freshman pitcher Allie Walljasper (10-2) allowed two earned runs, five hits and a walk in her 1 2/3 innings pitched.
In relief, freshman pitcher Carley Hoover (10-2) struggled with walks, allowing four free passes in her 3 1/3 innings pitched while only notching four strikeouts.
After replacing Hoover in the sixth, sophomore pitcher Baylee Corbello (9-0) gave up a two-RBI single and a two-run home run, which extended the Bulldogs’ lead to 9-2.
The Bulldogs’ success against LSU pitchers started with their ability to get the leadoff batter on base. In five of six innings, Mississippi State’s leadoff hitter reached base.
At the plate, the Tigers struggled to establish any kind of rhythm and string any hits together, stranding 10 runners on base.
LSU went 4-for-14 (.286) on the night with runners in scoring position.
While the Bulldogs thrived with two outs, hitting .462 (6-13), the Tigers stumbled, going 3-for-10 with two down.
The Tigers will travel to Knoxville, Tennessee, to face No. 11 Tennessee in a three-game SEC weekend series beginning with Game 1 at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
