For many fans she is the face of LSU Gymnastics. On the floor she is fierce, passionate and successful. But it is hard to find only one word that adequately describes what Rheagan Courville has meant to LSU in her four years as a Tiger.
“We knew that she was a special student athlete,” said LSU head coach D-D Breaux. “We had our eyes on Rheagan since she was about five years old, watching her develop and become an elite gymnast.”
As a Baton Rouge native growing up in the shadows of LSU, Courville’s upbringing, schooling and family life were her guiding forces towards becoming a Tiger. She attended University High, literally right across the street from the stately oaks of LSU, something Courville says was a major factor in her decision to stay home.
“It was really who I was to be in Baton Rouge and to represent LSU,” said Courville. “My parents and my extended family and everybody have been such huge LSU supporters, every sport no matter what and they just bleed purple and gold and it’s something that’s been inscribed in me forever and it’s something that I knew I wanted to be a part of.”
Courville’s freshman season at LSU was a developmental year, but everybody could see the potential for the future. The talent started to shine through during her sophomore year when the LSU team tasted success with a birth in the NCAA Super Six. With that came Courville’s first of two NCAA vault national titles, first in 2013, and then again in 2014 when LSU earned the second highest score at the Super Six.
Even with all of her personal accomplishments, Courville said the goal going into her senior year was to bring the first team national title to LSU Gymnastics.
“All the personal accolades just come with being here and working as hard as you can towards that team goal,” said Courville. “That’s been my goal since day one.”
The season of LSU Gymnastics has been unlike any other in history. The team took over the PMAC and proceeded to shatter program attendance records meet after meet. Gymnastics created a frenzied environment that willed the Tigers to huge victories over No. 11 Georgia and No. 2 Florida.
“We pack the PMAC and it just feels amazing to be able to perform and have everybody cheering for you in a full arena,” said Courville. “It doesn’t even compare to what it was my freshman year. It was exciting to be a part of but now it is electric in there.”
In her time at LSU, Courville has amassed a list of accomplishments virtually unmatched. She is a 19-time All-American, five time SEC champion, the 2013 SEC Gymnast of the Year, a four time All-SEC performer, and a two time vault NCAA champion. In not so many words, Rheagan Courville will go down as one of the greatest athletes to ever come out of Baton Rouge.
“We’re doing things that LSU Gymnastics has never done. We’re getting farther every season, and we know that the final national championship is so close that what’s not to be excited about?”
