Thursday afternoon, approximately 1,000 college students from across Louisiana marched on the State Capitol in protest of the education cuts proposed by Governor Bobby Jindal.
The event took place on the capitol steps, emceed by LSU senior Justin Dicharia. It featured speakers including State Representative and Gubernatorial Candidate John Bel Edwards of Amite and State Senator Dan Claitor of Baton Rouge.
Also taking the podium was a representative of Gubernatorial Candidate and current Lieutenant Governor Jay Dardenne and Cody Wells, a former LSU Student Government President.
The speakers centered their message on protest of the proposed cuts, while Claitor encouraged the students to take the protests directly down the street to the Governor’s Mansion.
Students created a change receptacle in the shape of the LSU Memorial Tower, encouraging their peers to donate and “Make the Change.” All proceeds will go directly to the LSU Relief Fund.
At the end of the protests, Dicharia led a group inside the capitol to a meeting of the Education Committee, where current LSU Student Government President Andrew Mathook testified on the effects of the proposed cuts.
