The LSU softball team (9-0) proved to be too much for Hofstra (1-3) to handle once again in Saturday’s 8-0 win.
The Tigers exploded for five runs in the third inning and that lead was more than enough for sophomore Kelsee Selman (2-0), who pitched another gem in her second start of the season.
Selman allowed only one hit in her five inning shutout, striking out eight and allowing one walk.
Torina said she was pleased with Selman’s performance in the circle.
“[Selman was] fantastic,” Torina said. “We’ve given her the ball twice and she’s been phenomenal.
Selman had yet to allow a hit at the time, but the Tigers offense took charge in the third inning.
An error and five singles contributed to LSU’s five runs in the third inning. LSU would go on to add three more runs in the fifth inning, including junior shortstop Bianka Bell’s fifth home run of the season, to give Selman a lead to work with.
The Tigers offensive explosion came after a frustrating outing at the plate against No. 20 Notre Dame (5-2) earlier in the day in which the Tigers were only able to collect three hits but still managed to record a 3-2 victory.
Torina said she thought the Tigers would go on to do more at the plate after LSU scored three runs in the first inning
“I did think we would do more,” Torina said. “I thought [Notre Dame’s Rachel Nasland] made an adjustment and we didn’t which is obviously something that we’ve got to do a better job with.”
Senior center fielder A.J. Andrews walked in LSU’s first at bat. Sophomore right fielder Bailey Landry followed with a bunt, and the throw to first was wild. Andrews came all the way around to score and Landry advanced to third.
Sophomore infielder Sahvanna Jaquish and junior first baseman Sandra Simmons each hit a double to drive in a run and give LSU a 3-0 lead.
After the first inning, the offense had little luck hitting against Notre Dame’s Nasland. Bell’s double in the third inning was the only other hit the Tigers managed.
Torina said Nasland did a good job making the Tigers chase.
“She just kept the ball up in the zone and we chased,” Torina said. “She did a good job of making us chase and we weren’t disciplined enough to lay off of it.”
The Tigers struggles for the remainder of the game at the plate meant that they were forced to rely on pitching and defense to see them over the line.
Freshman Carley Hoover and freshman Allie Walljasper combined their efforts in the circle to help the Tigers to victory.
Notre Dame was able to get a run back in the second inning with a home run from junior first baseman Micaela Arizmendi to cut LSU’s lead to 3-1. Another run in the 5th inning meant LSU’s lead was cut to a 3-2 margin
Senior center fielder Emilee Koerner’s single to start the sixth inning was the end of Hoover’s night. Hoover pitched 5 innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs.
Walljasper came in for a relief appearance. She pitched her way out of a bases load jam in the sixth inning and another one in the seventh to secure the win for the Tigers.
Walljasper said her mindset is to force hitters to put the ball on the ground and to focus on her catcher.
Torina said she thinks that the team is capable of staying in any ball game with the pitching it has.
“I think we have good pitching,” Torina said. “So I think we’re going to be able to stay in any ball game. No matter what our offense scores, I think our pitching is going to keep us in the ball game.”
LSU plays against Notre Dame at 11:30 a.m. Sunday.
