The early 2000s were a scary time for fashion.
I try to leave every trend that arrived between 2000 and 2010 in the past, but with fashion being cyclical, we have to learn to take the good with the bad.
“Thirteen” is a prime example of 2000s fashion that could use a bit of work. The film stars Evan Rachel Wood and Nikki Reed as two teenagers who are exploring their reckless sides with sex, drugs and rock and roll. Just kidding, the third is actually tons of piercings.
Reed’s character is the more rebellious of the two and a bit of an instigator to Wood. Something Wood’s mother could do without.
With a film full of crop tops and flare jeans, the style inspiration here needs to be taken a bit differently. Instead of creating outfits to match Reed’s style, it’s better to take the fabrics she used and the overall bad girl mentality to create a look that’s much more fashion forward.
Reed’s character was repetitive with her outfit style which means honing in on the fabrics she used will be easy. It’s basically four— cotton, denim, leather and silver metal. Her colors were also very simple with black, blue, purple and white.
Now all you have to do when putting together ensembles is hone in on the “bad girl” mentality.
I have a few outfit suggestions that meet all the “thirteen” requirements. The first most closely resembles Reed’s outfits. Find a pair of well-fitting dark skinny jeans and pair them with a black camisole. Overtop, place a leather jacket or vest and finish with black flats or heels.
For a more dressed up look, find yourself a leather skirt, either mini or pencil length, and pair it with a titan blue or deep purple blouse. Finish with heels.
If leather is a little too much for you, stick with the dark skinny jeans but find a high waisted pair. Top the jeans with a crop top in one of Reed’s classic colors or a pattern in those colors. For shoes, use flats or sandals.
And remember, some cool silver jewelry, involving a piercing or not, will finish all of these ensembles off in perfect “Thirteen” style.
