The No. 14 LSU softball team hung on to defeat No. 13 Arizona 4-3 at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. The win sees the Tigers (14-0) equal the best start in program history.
LSU’s offense jumped on the Wildcats (10-2) early. Senior center fielder A.J. Andrews hit a triple in LSU’s first at-bat of the game. Sophomore right fielder Bailey Landry followed with a single to score Andrews and give LSU a 1-0 lead.
Landry hit another RBI single in the third inning to extend the LSU lead to 2-0 before sophomore third baseman Sahvanna Jaquish hit a sacrifice fly to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead after three innings.
Jaquish added another sacrifice fly in the fifth inning to stretch LSU’s lead to 4-0.
Arizona managed to fight back in the top of the sixth inning when it scored three runs to cut the LSU lead to 4-3. However, those three runs were all the Wildcats could muster against freshman pitcher Carley Hoover.
Hoover pitched a complete game for the Tigers. She allowed three runs on nine hits and finished with eight strikeouts, throwing 143 pitches across seven innings.
The Tigers play a doubleheader Saturday. LSU plays against Nebraska at noon and against Northwestern at 7 p.m.
