LSU softball coach Beth Torina stressed how deep her pitching staff was leading up to the Tiger Classic this weekend.
The depth was on full display for the No. 19 LSU softball team (4-0) during its 7-0 win against North Carolina State (2-2) on Saturday at Tiger Park.
Freshman Allie Walljasper was the the fourth different starting pitcher in as many games for the Tigers, and she was just as impressive as the previous three to take the circle, throwing a complete game shutout.
Torina said she was pleased with how well Walljasper performed in her first start for LSU and with the depth of her pitching staff.
“I’d be interested to know if there’s another team in the country that’s got four pitchers that have thrown four complete games and that’s 4-0, that’s even used four pitchers to the extent we have,” Torina said.
Walljasper’s performance highlighted the Tiger’s depth in the circle. In just her first start for LSU, she went seven innings, allowed only four hits, allowed no runs and struck out seven batters on 97 pitches.
Not only did Walljasper excel in the circle, she sparked the Tiger’s offense with the first home run of her LSU career in the 2nd inning to give LSU a 1-0 lead. Walljasper said it was nice to help herself out by getting involved in the offense.
“It was awesome,” Walljasper said. “It was one of my bigger hits, and when I made contact I knew it was going out.”
The rest of LSU’s lineup helped build up the lead in the 3rd inning.
Senior center fielder A.J. Andrews reached third base after N.C. State left fielder Tyler Ross dropped a fly ball. Sophomore right fielder Bailey Landry singled to right in the next at bat, allowing Andrews to score and giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
Bianka Bell followed with her second home run of the season to extend LSU’s lead to 4-0.
The Tigers added another run in the 5th and two more in the 6th. The seven runs, coupled with Walljasper’s gem, proved to be too much for the Wolfpack to overcome.
After struggling for much of the season-opener against Memphis on Friday, the LSU offense has exploded. Through only four games, the Tigers are hitting .406.
Bell is hitting .615 with 2 home runs and 8 RBI. She said she is concerned with putting the ball in play and letting her teammates pick her up when they need to.
“I just focus on trying to put the ball in play and whatever they give me,” Bell said. If they’re throwing in, out, up, down, I’m just ready to roll.”
The Tigers face N.C. State again on Sunday at 12 p.m.
