Each year, Voodoo Music and Arts Experience is highlighted for the music it offers, whether it’s headlining acts or local bands. However, Voodoo is much more than music. Here are a few of my favorite experiences outside of music on day two of the festival.
1. Pepsi’s tent immersed attendees in art. It had a huge dome set up that was filled with bean bags for festival goers to lean back and gaze up at projections covering the top half of the dome. Projections of symmetric shapes, fractal patterns, colorful creatures and more filled the space. It was the perfect escape from the downpour that dominated Saturday afternoon and evening.
Outside of the dome, Pepsi had tables set up with spiral art machines. Attendees filled out a postcard to send to themselves or a friend, placed it in the spinning machine and squirted inks onto the cards, creating their own one-of-a-kind art projects.
2. I love weaving in and out of the vendor tents at festivals. It’s fun to see things from around the world offered by traveling vendors as well as items created locally sold by New Orleans natives. I’m always a sucker for the jewelry vendors who handcraft their pieces, but everything from art to clothes to soaps are offered.
3. You can’t take a trip to New Orleans without indulging in Cajun cuisine. Today, I ate a seafood bisque bread bowl from Cartozzo’s food tent. It was so rich and gooey and perfect. I’m still drooling.
4. Voodoo seems to have its very own landmarks with the art installations that remain each year. I stopped by the “Face Forward” sculpture that’s resided at Voodoo the past few years that I’ve attended. It’s an interactive piece with controls just yards away that move parts of the face. While the lineup changes every year, some things stay the same.
