In yet another physical match-up between LSU and Alabama, the now ninth-ranked Tigers suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of a near perfect performance by the Crimson Tide en route to a 30-16 win at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
“I think we’ll understand that any time you play the way you did you got what you deserved,” said LSU head coach Les Miles following the loss. “We are a much better football team than the way we played tonight.”
The Tide were led on the ground by Heisman hopeful runningback Derrick Henry who ran for 210 yards and three touchdowns. LSU runningback, and Heisman front runner, Leonard Fournette was held to by far his smallest output of the season rushing for only 31 yards on 19 carries.
Alongside LSU’s smothered rushing attack, the Tigers couldn’t get consistent play out of any other phase of an offense that was averaging 466 yards per game before being held to just 182 against Bama.
“We blocked the majority in the run game pretty clean up front,” said senior offensive tackle Vadal Alexander. “I just don’t know exactly what happened when the ball got to the next level or past the defensive line.”
For the fifth straight time the Tigers were unable to get past Alabama, tying their second longest losing streak to the Tide. LSU fans are now forced to wait 365 more days for another shot at Alabama, hoping that next year is the year the streak will finally end.
“It’s hurts,” said senior safety Jalen Mills. “We can’t mope about it. We still have a lot of big SEC games coming up.”
“Every year is an independent year and. It does not function to lump them together,” Miles said.
LSU’s aspirations to go to the SEC Championship are not quite dead yet, but the Tigers must now rely on the Tide to falter down the stretch for them to get back in the running. The Tigers host Arkansas next Saturday night in Tiger Stadium.
