Erik Browne, who goes by stage name Unicorn Fukr, and Christopher Gomez, who goes by stage name Herb Christopher, are no strangers to the New Orleans electronic music scene.
Both DJs are LSU alumni. Now, both producers live in New Orleans and are resident DJs at Kompression, a monthly party at Dragon’s Den that’s been going on for more than five years.
Kompression brought the duo to Voodoo Music and Arts Experience for an afternoon set on Oct. 31.
Browne is familiar with Voodoo — this is his fourth year playing at the festival. When reflecting back on previous years, he said the stages got bigger, but the space got more compressed.
While this facilitates more people being capable of attending more shows, they noted that sometimes the sound gets distorted the further away attendees are from the stage.
The duo has collaborated together since 2008, so it’s easy for them to work on new music, they said.
Browne has traveled to other festivals, including one in Croatia. The DJs noted that Europe is years ahead of America in terms of electronic music. The industry there is far less commercialized than the U.S., they said.
“It’s very focused on talent and high-quality sound,” Browne said.
While discussing the electronic music industry, they mentioned that the genre has touched almost all music released today.
Browne described his own style as underground on the huge spectrum of electronic music genres.
He also works on projects with Quickie Mart, whose real name is Martin Arceneaux, another local producer. Browne and Arceneaux recently started a record label with Organic, a DJ from Atlanta.
Browne performs weekly at Church, a party that occurs every Sunday at Dragon’s Den.
