The results are in and John Bel Edwards is Louisiana’s next governor.
It was a close race between Edwards and Sen. David Vitter. Edwards won the election with 55 percent of the vote and Vitter trailed closely behind with 45 percent.
“Thank y’all so much we came up short tonight,” said David Vitter.
In Edwards’ speech he talked about his plan for the future of Louisiana and thanked his former competitor Jay Dardenne.
“He decided, like me to put Louisiana first. Not self, not party but Louisiana,” said Edwards.
Vitter also discussed his future plans as a Louisiana Senator.
“I wanted to pursue new challenges outside of the senate no matter what,” said Vitter. “I reached my personal limit.”
Other politicians attended Edwards’ election party like former Governor Edwin Edwards and New Orleans Mayor, Mitch Landrieu
“I’m looking forward to working with him he’s going to be a great partner,” said Landrieu. “He understands the relationship between the cities and state government.”
Edwards said he is excited to work on making Louisiana great again.
“We have a lot of work to do,” said Edwards. “We must unite and work together regardless of party, race, gender or geography. We are together and we are one Louisiana.”
