Local Louisiana performers are worried about the fate of the film industry under new legislation that’s limiting the state’s incentives.
“I haven’t had a meeting, interview or reading for something in seven or eight weeks,” Richard Holden, Head of LSU’s Undergraduate Program, said.
Holden said he expects a lot of Louisiana businesses to move to other areas, specifically Atlanta, GA.
“I know that some companies have pulled out from filming here and moved to Atlanta,” Lauren Graham, local TV and film actress, said.
The state had seen an increase in movie production previously due to the percentage of paybacks offered by the state to filmmakers. The rise in the industry led to its nickname “The Hollywood South.”
The new program is capping the tax credit amounts for the fiscal year at $180-million. Holden said that around 10,000 Louisiana jobs have already been affected.
“Louisiana has had there tax program for over ten years now,” Christopher Stelly, executive director of Louisiana’s Entertainment Industry, said.
Stelly said that the state shouldn’t see a decrease of opportunities in the industry. He said that the cap limit is beneficial to the overall state budget.
Many locals are continuing to stay optimistic about what the future holds in
“The Hollywood South.”
