The theme of space has been explored thousands of times in music over the years. Whether it’s rock, rap or pop, the travel into the unknown is always the same — but not with Maryland rapper Logic and his new album “The Incredible True Story.”
On his sophomore effort, Sir Robert Bryson Hall II strays far away from what he did on “Under Pressure.” Instead of telling us where he’s been, we’re being thrusted into a ride on a spaceship where he tells us where Logic wants to go.
There are 14 songs on the album with four skits placed between and at the end. The skits, which Logic wrote himself, tell the tale of a human society that destroyed the earth. Two men are exploring space to find “Paradise,” a new planet for humans to inhabit.
Through this lense, Logic examines the struggles he’s faced in finding his place in hip hop and society.
“The Incredible True Story” opens with a beat similar to Kanye West’s “Amazing” setting the tone for journey. As it progresses, the album’s production pulls you in as Logic showcases his knowledge of old school rap with new school flow. His double time rhyme scheme is layered throughout the tracks.
It’s evident he’s evolved since his first album. Songs like “Never Been” and “Like Woah” highlight Young Sinatra’s ability to deliver his bars in a confident manner while still remaining the level headed individual fans have known him to be.
More importantly, he addresses issues he didn’t on “Under Pressure.” Logic, a biracial male, never touched on the subject of his white mom and black dad in the first album but after critics and Twitter reviewers repeatedly brought it up, he’s going in on the topic.
He’s been accused of biting the style of artists such as Drake, Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole because of his delivery and style. However, this isn’t the case as heard on “The Incredible True Story.” You can hear the inspirations Logic draws from and how they influenced his life.
The journey Logic takes us on is more than a simple space theme with some 808s and simple lyrics on it. “The Incredible True Story” is a message of a young man saying he’s coming for the top using everything he’s absorbed over his short time in the game — all while solving a rubix cube.
