In a tweet sent out Saturday evening, the NCAA has deemed it legal for LSU sophomore running back Leonard Fournette to auction off his jersey with proceeds intended for South Carolina flood victims.
Following the Tigers’ 45-24 win against South Carolina, Fournette, a New Orleans native, read a prepared statement in a postgame interview with ESPN, discussing how the flooding affected him and his plan to auction the jersey.
“I want to send my prayers, condolences and empathy to the people of South Carolina,” Fournette said, reading from his typed statement. “What they are going through reminds me of what we went through, my people, in New Orleans, Louisiana went through 10 years ago with Hurricane Katrina. We played a game today that the people of South Carolina right now are in need. I would like to auction off my game jersey, as is, to the highest bidder to help with the relief efforts. People of Louisiana not only care but know first hand what South Carolina is going through.”
Fournette was told by coaches after the game that it was against NCAA rules to auction his jersey.
“Nah, they’re not going to let me do it,” Fournette told the media after the game. “That’s what I wanted to do. I just wanted to help out the families and people out there. That’s all.
The NCAA then sent out this tweet at 7:46 p.m. CT.
