The first day of Voodoo Music and Arts Experience was successful with great music, food and weather.
Modest Mouse’s set was that of a traditional headliner, a full band, generic light production and greatest hits.
They opened with the sweet melody of “The World at Large,” capturing the audience’s attention for the rest of its set.
The band played other hits like “Float On” and “Doin’ the Cockroach.” But the most impressive part of its performance was probably Isaac Brock playing a guitar solo with his mouth.
After Modest Mouse, I checked out Girl Talk’s set, which was by far my favorite.
He began his set with the usual repetitive, distorted “Girl Talk” chants, hyping up the audience to see Gregg Gillis come out in a Hannibal Lecter costume.
His set was explosively electric. He even went overtime.
Last, I hit Florence and The Machine, which was beautiful. I could feel her heart and soul pulsing through her set.
I loved hearing “Spectrum” while she frolicked across the stage barefoot.
Festival attendees were very spirited, many of them adorning Halloween costumes.
There seemed to be significantly less people today than there were at last year’s Friday of Voodoo, which made most of the walking and audiences more tolerable.
The food options included everything from traditional Cajun food to festival food, like fried Oreos and Twinkies, to tacos and Thai.
The weather was perfect today. It was that rare, but delicious occurrence of Louisiana weather where it’s sunny and clear but breezy and comfortable.
However, the festival grounds were still muddy and rough from the previous rain, which is unfortunate considering tomorrow and Sunday will be filled with rain.
Festival staff was even directing people away from the mud, it was that bad.
For there to be deep puddles on a sunny day like today, I can only imagine how far up my legs the mud will reach tomorrow when the rain hits.
