Louisiana is currently one of the leading places in the United States to create movies and shows– especially horror films.
Baton Rouge Horror Film Fest was held from October 9-11. There was a venue change on the second and third day from 37098 Miller St. in Prairieville, La. to Gwendolyn’s in Baton Rouge. The festival is new to the area, but hope to bring light to the importance of the Louisiana movie business.
There were three full days of festivities including speakers from the Louisiana movie industry, members of the cast from “American Horror Story,” local artists and a Baton Rouge born band.
One of the creators of BRHFF is Ashen Bonaventure. She is a local actress and YouTuber with a passion for film.
She said she started the festival with the intentions of helping people achieve their goals and dreams of working in film. Bonaventure said she wanted a place for local business owners or artists to have their work shown while also creating an easy place for people to come and enjoy it.
“Instead of seeing one movie at a theatre for $10, you can come here and see five shorts and two full-lengths for $13,” Bonaventure said.
The festival showed both full and short length horror movies all three evenings with titles such as “Invaders,” “Light Years,” “Zombie Shark.”
The movies weren’t the only attractions for guests to enjoy. A cast board board held on Oct. 10 which consisted of three “American Horror Story” cast members — Drew Rin Varick , Dylan Langlois and Bryan Blasingame.
The cast shared behind-the-scene tidbits about working on set. Rin Varick was one of the members who had a chance to interact with many of the recurring cast. They said they all have a shared adornment for Jessica Lange and Rin Varick had an onscreen kiss with Sarah Paulson.
“Having to spend 6 months together, we have a lot of conversations and we created great friends,” Langlois said.
Wolfbrain, local alternative rock band, made an appearance to bring live music to BRHFF. Joseph Poliquin, a co creator of BRHFF, is the bass player and vocalist of Wolfbrain with Connor Ridgeway on drums and Zach Stephens on the guitar and vocals.
While the location change was unexpected, Poliquin said the new, smaller venue is giving them a chance for growth in future events.
