HOOVER, Ala. – Alabama coach Nick Saban parts the sea of fans clad in crimson and houndstooth to begin the 2015 campaign starting with the annual circus called Southeastern Conference Media Days.
Despite the hope of a new season, two Ohio State fans stand as a stark reminder of the Crimson Tide’s 42-35 loss to the Buckeyes in 2014 Sugar Bowl.
As usual, Saban and his players made it clear they are focused on improving this season, not dwelling on the end of last year.
“I can’t worry about the past,” said senior linebacker Reggie Ragland. “We lost. I’m sad that happened, but I’ve got to worry about getting the team ready for this year. I can’t worry about last year.”
Along with continuing its dominant defense, Alabama looks to create versatility in its offense during the second year under offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin.
Senior running back Kenyan Drake returning from injury will be a key factor in adding a different dynamic to the Crimson Tide’s offense heading into this season.
“Kenyan Drake has tremendous diversity as a player,” Saban said. “He has very good running skills and running instincts, but he’s a fantastic receiver. In his position, it’s a little bit easier to almost create mismatches for him to be able to use those skills as a receiver than it would be if we played him at receiver.”
Drake averaged 5.1 yards per rush and tallied four touchdowns in just five games last season before breaking his left leg against Ole Miss on Oct. 4, 2014.
Despite missing nine games last season, Drake said he heads into this season fully confident with the role he will play in the offense no matter what position that may be.
“I definitely accept those roles and I was very thankful to Kiffin for putting the trust in me to be able to do that,” Drake said. “I look forward to see what he has up his sleeve this year.”
