Bill Arnsparger, former LSU football coach from 1984-1986, died Friday in his Athens, Alabama, home at the age of 88, the LSU athletic department confirmed in a news release.
Arnsparger led the Tigers to two Sugar Bowl appearances and an SEC title in 1986 before becoming the University of Florida athletic director from 1986-1992. His record with LSU was 26-8-2.
Prior to his tenure in Baton Rouge, Arnsparger worked in both the college and professional ranks, most notably as the defensive coordinator for the back-to-back Super Bowl champion Miami Dolphins in 1972 and 1973. He also was the head coach of the New York Giants for two and a half seasons.
Arnsparger finished his career as the defensive coordinator for the San Diego Chargers but officially retired following the Chargers’ 1994 Super Bowl appearance due to prostate cancer surgery.
