HOOVER, Ala. – For the past two seasons, Georgia has been the also-ran in the Southeastern Conference eastern division, finishing third and second accordingly behind two-time champion Missouri.
Heading into the 2015 campaign, the Bulldogs hope to bring home their first SEC championship by avoiding the early season losses that have plagued them in the past and relying on their 2014 SEC Freshman of the Year, Nick Chubb.
In 2013 and 2014, Georgia stumbled in one of its first two two games. The Bulldog’s 38-35 loss against South Carolina in Week 2 cost Georgia a shot at playing in the SEC championship despite shutting out Missouri on Oct. 11.
“That game is a tribute,” said senior linebacker Jordan Jenkins. “It really backs up and proves that claim that you can’t sleep on any team. Any given Saturday the team that wants to win and will work harder to win is going to win.”
Georgia hopes to break through the trend of mental lapses in 2015 by adjusting its perspective to each game this season.
“That’s why we changed the way the approach every game this season,” Jenkins said. “We’re not going to show the amateur side of us that did in that game.”
After racking up 1,547 yards during his freshman campaign in 2014, Chubbs enters the season as one of the conference’s marquee running backs and may have to carry the offense early with question mark at quarterback.
Georgia coach Mark Richt made it clear that there is no end in sight for the quarterback battle
“I have no idea who the starter is going to be,” Richt said. “We have 29 practice opportunities before the first game, and we’re going to get a rotation where we can see the guys that we want to see compete and then make a decision on who should be the starter.”
