I think about Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt today as much as I think about MySpace – I don’t.
In the late 2000s, Montag and Pratt were almost unstoppable, riding the success of the nearly scripted MTV reality show, “The Hills.”
Every week, teens would tune in to see what kind of drama Montag and Pratt would drum up with castmates such as Lauren Conrad and Whitney Port.
At the height of Montag’s popularity in 2010, she released an album aptly titled “Superficial.” The record wasn’t successful, only selling around 1,000 copies in the first week.
Like many reality TV stars, they were professional drama-starters, and they got paid pretty well to do it.
Though Montag disputed it, in 2009 it was rumored that she was being paid $100,000 per episode of “The Hills”, while Pratt was being paid $65,000.
In 2013, the couple admitted to spending around $10 million, basically acknowledging that they’re broke. This stark admission begs the question: Where did the money go?
In 2010, Montag had a gamut of plastic surgeries, shocking reality TV fans with her new Barbie-doll looks.
The couple also admitted to spending money frivolously on crystals, private jets, and Montag’s awful album.
The duo was so desperate for money and fame, that Montag and Pratt even admitted to faking a breakup for a TV show that was eventually scrapped.
Since their time on the Hills, the couple traded in their lavish homes for more modest living quarters.
In July 2015, according to TMZ, the couple was seen around the Los Angeles area with camera crews following them.
Pratt said Montag and himself feel like idiots for the irresponsible managing of their money.
Only time will tell what the couple will do next, but I hope it doesn’t show up on my TV screen.
