Vulfpeck is a funk rhythm section formed in 2011. The band members are Jack Stratton, Woody Goss, Theo Katzman, and Joe Dart. They all attended University of Michigan’s music school, but their formation was a culmination of a string of coincidences. Each member is a multi instrumentalist- but primary roles are Dart on bass, Stratton on keys and drums, Katzman on drums and guitar, and Goss on keys.
Band founder, Jack Stratton, conceived the band as a German version of the Funk Brothers, session musicians who performed the instrumentals on 1960s Motown records, hoping to channel that era of the live rhythm section. Inspired by pioneers of funk and jazz, Vulfpeck aims for a simple and minimal sound where each instrument contributes what it needs but doesn’t dominate.
Their popularity first grew in 2011 after the video of their debut track “Beastly” got notice. Originally, Stratton didn’t want it to be filmed, but somebody had an idea to film it for a thesis. It collected views and requests for it to be available for purchase piled up.
Vulfpeck has independently released four 6-track albums with its first full-length feature, Thrill of the Arts, to be released on October 9, 2015.
