The Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank is fighting to end hunger by raising awareness for Hunger-Action Month.
Hunger Action-Month is a nationwide initiative put on by Feeding America and its member food banks to encourage community involvement.
“We need the help, more than any other time we need everybody to help us get that message out, that’s what Hunger-Action Month is all about,” Charlene Montelaro, Senior Vice President of The Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank, said.
The food bank holds various events throughout the month to encourage residents to participate.
Trevor’s wish is one of the events that Montelaro said they are honored to be a part of.
Trevor Sims, a Baton Rouge native, was first diagnosed with cancer at five-years-old. At the age of 10, Sims found out his cancer was terminal, according to The Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank.
“Because he had lived in poverty and had never had anything, he said his last wish was to feed the hungry,” Montelaro said.
Sims inspired the community to continue to fulfill his wish through donations and volunteering.
Trevor’s Wish has raised over $110,000 and enough food equivalent to more than 500,000 meals over the last two years, according to The Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank.
“That kid changed my life forever, he saw the bigger picture of trying to help the city that he loved before he passed away,” Ashton Kennedy, Louisiana Tech accounting student, said.
Kennedy said he first met Trevor when he served as Student Council President of Central High School.
Since Trevor’s passing in 2013, Kennedy has continued to participate in Trevor’s Wish and has ordered a statue in memory of Trevor that will be placed in Baton Rouge in his honor.
