LSU football made more moves to the coaching staff Wednesday morning, hiring Ed Orgeron as the team’s new defensive line coach. Former defensive line coach Brick Haley has been reassigned to an administrative role.
The news comes only one day after LSU hired Alabama linebackers coach Kevin Steele as its new defensive coordinator. Both Steele and Orgeron will be introduced at a press conference at 4 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.
“Ed is an expert when it comes to the defensive line,” coach Les Miles said in a press release. “He will bring tremendous enthusiasm and energy to our program. His passion and love for the state of Louisiana makes him a great fit for us.”
Orgeron, despite never playing or coaching for LSU before, has roots based in Louisiana. The Larose, Louisiana native played defensive line at Northwestern St. and had coaching stints at McNeese St. and Nicholls St.
Orgeron’s last coaching stint was defensive line coach at USC, where he eventually became interim coach in 2013 and led the Trojans to a 6-2 finish.
“Ed has done a great job at every coaching stop he’s made. His teams are always well prepared, played hard on every snap and fed off the enthusiasm and excitement that he brought to the field,” Miles said. “This is a great hire for us and we are really excited about Coach O becoming a Tiger.”
Haley has served as the defensive line coach since 2009. Before that, he served as the defensive line coach for Mississippi State and the Chicago Bears.
