The seventh, and final, season of “Parks and Recreation” aired two back-to-back episodes during its premiere Tuesday night.
The first episode begins in the year of 2017 with Pawnee’s Leslie Knope and Ben Wyatt exiting the elevator they entered at the end of season six. They are on their way to a meeting to discuss the future of land the Newport family owns. Leslie wants the land so she can turn it into a national park, but she’s got some competition.
In the past years, the parks department’s most notable staff have made some changes in their lives. Ron left the department two years ago to work for the Very Good Building and Development Company, which means he is now a part of Team Gryzzl (yes, the free WiFi people from season six) and Leslie’s newest enemy. The two are now fighting for the Newport land.
April Ludgate and Andy Dwyer are preparing for the Pawnee Bicentennial Celebration where Ben is being honored as Pawnee’s Man of the Year. April has a job working at the national parks office and Andy is busy filming his television show “Johnny Karate.” Andy and April are worried they are becoming boring, and they make a plan to become more spontaneous at the celebration that night.
Entrepreneur Tom Haverford’s restaurant, Tom’s Bistro, is thriving and he’s become quite successful.
Leslie tries to gather her old parks team to take down Ron, but it appears Ron has already persuaded Tom and Donna Meagle to join his team. Loyal Jerry, Larry and now Terry Gergich offers to help Leslie.
Tom presents Ben, but ends up giving a speech about himself before finally inviting Ben to the stage. Ben begins to give his speech, but it’s cut short by the arrival of a celebratory cake. During the celebration, Andy and April devise a plan to be spontaneous which involves Andy taking his pants off, but Andy is upstaged by Leslie and Ron who have broken into a fight and ruin the cake.
Both teams meet with Jessica Newport about her family’s land. Leslie suggests they donate the park and offers to name it the Newport National Park.
Tom apologizes to Ben for the speech and reads Ben the real speech. The two have a moment and cry. Meanwhile, April and Andy decide to buy a house that is supposedly haunted.
A press conference reveals that the decision will be between Leslie and Ron’s teams. Leslie declares war on Team Gryzzl. Her declaration ends episode one.
Episode two begins with Leslie paying a visit to Councilman Jamm. Jamm is the deciding vote on a zoning dispute that could ultimately determine who receives the land, and he’s also now dating Ron’s ex-wife, Tammy 2. Oddly enough, he is also beginning to look a little like Ron.
Leslie recruits Tammy to take down Ron, but it backfires and Jamm sides with Ron because Tammy thought it would help her win Ron back.
Talkshow host Joan Callamezzo is inducted into the Pawnee Walk of Fame, which inspires April to reconsider her job and contemplate pursuing her passion as a mortician. Ben visits the morgue with April, and she changes her mind once she realizes that job is actually depressing and there’s paperwork.
Tom realizes he’s tired of being single so he and Andy venture to Chicago to meet up with Lucy, Tom’s ex-girlfriend. Tom offers Lucy a job as a manager at his restaurant, but she says she’ll have to check with her boyfriend before accepting.
Leslie turns to Ron and asks him to help save Jamm from Tammy. He agrees, and the two work together to teach Jamm that Tammy is actually evil. The three confront Tammy in the library, where Tammy proceeds to remove all of her clothes to persuade Jamm to stay with her. She even offers to swing Jamm’s vote to Leslie’s side, but Leslie refuses. Jamm ultimately ends his relationship with Tammy.
Jamm says he’s decided to abstain from the final vote regarding zoning because Leslie and Ron are his best friends. Ron said Leslie was very big to turn down Tammy’s vote and the two have a moment of peace.
The episode ends with Lucy working in Tom’s Bistro and Andy predicts the two will fall in love.
