For me movies are a part of my every day life. The classics, drama, comedy, you name it and I usually have an open mind about watching it. It seems as if Netflix is always on my TV and more times than not my eyes are glued there rather than on my homework.
With the Golden Globes past us and the Academy Awards approaching, it made me realize something. It seems like the actors I once thought to be mostly comedy actors have stepped outside of this expected norm.
When I think about Steve Carrell, my mind immediately thinks about “The Anchorman” and “Get Smart.” I don’t dislike comedies but movies like this are not ones that would be at the top of my queue. In these movies I can’t take Carrell seriously. Just take “The Office” for example. I have just started season two and I don’t think I am used to the things that he says or when he screams out loud randomly for that matter. I know it is just a TV show but I feel awkward and embarrassed for him, especially when he makes comments like, “To be fair blondes, brunettes, ya know there are a lot of dumb people out there.” But I’m sure that is the point.
I didn’t think Steve Carrell could be serious in a movie until I saw the trailer for the Golden Globe and Academy Award nominee, “Foxcatcher.” I was speechless. Carrell smiled once in the trailer and when he did I swear it looks like he is wearing fake teeth.
It is interesting to see Carrell in such a commanding central role. Granted it is kind of creepy the way he talks without moving his jaw and how he draws out his words. But this is such a transformation for him, that I believe he has broken out his type casted roles.
Like Carrell, Jonah Hill is starting to emerge as a serious actor. Hill is known for movies like “21 Jump Street,” “This is the End” and “Superbad.” Hill definitely leaves me laughing in most of his films but that is all I ever thought of him. Seeing him in those movies seemed expected and I would think, “There he is again in that stupidly funny movie.” Hill was predictable.
January 23 marks the release of “True Story,” where Hill plays a former New York Times journalist who meets a murderer that claimed his identity.
The trailer is riveting and Hill has a chance to break the barriers with this one.
What else can we expect from actors like Carrell and Hill in the next couple of months and years? These actors have made it on my radar and I like their change. Do you?
